"Off The Record"
When I listen back to 'Modena', I can hear so much of my dads musical influence on it, probably more than any other record I've played on. He brought me up on artists like Booker T & The MG's, Ray Charles, Steve Cropper and Stevie Wonder. Once I threw a bit of Paul Weller, Billy Preston and Miles Kane into the mix, we were ready to go.
The funny thing is I'd known Garry-John Kane (Button Up's bassist, song-writer and band leader) for years, through playing football, before we finally worked together. But what I didn't know, was we had both been brought up on that clasic "two-minute toe-tapping" soul sound, that your body demands you play again and again.
So when he approached me to play in the band, I was excited about working with my friend, but once he let me hear the first couple of tracks, there was no doubt in my mind, I was in and I was in deep!
